CE Marking
T Sullivan Engineering are pleased to announce and confirm we are now certified to both BS EN 1090-1 2009+A1:2011 (EX2) and BS EN ISO 9001:2008.
The ISO accreditation shows our ongoing commitment to quality and most people across different industry sectors will be aware of the ISO standard. The BS EN 1090-1 (also known as “CE marking”) is somewhat unappreciated and understated in many circles. Whist a number of large and small organisations are aware of CE marking, some companies buying structural steel are not up to speed with these legal obligations. However, the size of the organization and size of the order for does not lessen the legal requirement for the structural steelwork to be CE marked by the manufacture. It became a legal requirement from the 1st July 2014 for all structural steelwork being produced to be CE marked within its relevant execution class.
The consequence of not having your steelwork CE marked may now be felt by manufactures main contactors and clients alike, possible issues that have been highlighted are CDM compliance, collateral warranties and building insurance. Should there ever be a health and safety breach which involves the steelwork or metalwork, and the HSE are called to investigate the incident it’s invested this is one of the first things they will request.
There is a large amount of confusion over where the CE marking starts and stops in steelwork and especially in metalwork. Last month the government did a u turn and took a couple products out of the mandatory requirement to have CE marking. Whilst it is certain that any structural steelwork requires CE marking handrails are currently an exception to this rule, however any metalwork staircases which the handrails are fixed to will require the CE mark and other queries like this rumble on within the industry. From a purchasing point of view it will be a mind field to understand which products you are buying will or will not require CE marking, unless you purchase all steelwork and metalwork products from an accredited supplier, of which we are one, up to execution class 2 (EX2).
To discuss the matter further on what execution class your proposed works fit into, please just give us a call on 0151 630 0222 and we will be happy to assist you.
