Have you heard? The steel work industry is changing!

CE Marking

CE Marking

“The construction industry is facing one of the most significant changes for a decade as CE Marking of construction products becomes mandatory in all Member States throughout the European Union and the European Economic Area.

CE Marking for all construction products, covered by a harmonised European standard or conforming to a European Technical Assessment became mandatory on 1 July 2013. For fabricated structural steelwork, CE Marking will become mandatory on 1 July 2014. This represents a major development for engineers, contractors and steelwork specialists and it demands careful attention to the new obligations imposed.

This article highlights how the steel construction sector has been working behind the scenes towards achieving CE Marking. Perhaps more importantly, it spells out in detail what it will mean for the rest of the construction sector and what you need to do to comply with the Construction Products Regulation[1] that is the legal basis for the new regime.”

T Sullivan Engineering is taking it responsible to the new regulations seriously as when you start to investigate the new standards there are a number of mixed messages from business, from firms will go bust over night as if it’s not in place the work will dry up like turning off a tap! All the way through to it will not have a major impact and it will not be enforced, and a large number of firms are simply not bothering with it.

Ultimately like most markets the success or changes to the market with the implementation of the CE marking will be driven by the people who purchase the goods, as if it is not a requirement on PPQ’s, tender documents and the like and ultimately not asked for it will struggle to impose its self on the market, as firms will be able to get away trading without it. It’s not surprising some of the industry are standing back and watching and waiting to see how things pan out due to the considerable time and cost investment involved in obtaining the new accreditation and implementing the systems that come with the new regulations!

We have taken the view that the best way forward is for us to embrace the new regulation and we are currently working towards obtaining accreditation which we envisage will be well in place for the 1st July 2014 deadline, if you wish to discuss how these regulations could affect you just give us a call
